Wetland Restoration

Experts in Wetland Restoration

At FiveRivers, we’re proud to offer a wide range of wetland restoration services, from design and monitoring through to construction.

The aim of wetland restoration is to enhance this unique ecosystem which provides habitat, breeding areas and food to a vast array of species. Largely, wetland restoration revolves around the reconnecting or lowering of rivers, the slowing of water, or the reduction of the speed in which water is removed from a given site. Our wetland restoration work also involves establishing why a wetland area may be in decline and providing the best practical solution to restore it to its former best habitat.

Wetland restoration encompasses techniques which are also use in river restoration. Sound knowledge around wetland restoration plays a critical role in project planning: as well as setting the standard for wetland restoration works, our team always go above and beyond, bringing added value to your project.

It is essential that protections are put in place to maintain important habitats and to sustain biodiversity, the impacts of which being far-reaching. We at FiveRivers have been working with wetlands for over 25 years, meaning we’re well-acquainted with the challenges which may arise during your wetland restoration project. Our wetland restoration specialists are adept at overcoming issues such as challenging access, rapidly changing water levels and protected and invasive species.

Wetland
The Problems

90% of the UK’s Wetlands Lost

Wetlands cover around 6% of the earth’s land surface and are extremely valuable as both ecosystems and regulators of the global climate. Unfortunately, approximately 70% of natural wetland areas have been lost over the last century, largely due to changes of land use, climate change and urbanisation. If the loss of wetlands continues at the current rate, it is estimated that more than 25% of all wetland plants and animals could become extinct.

As well as their critical importance in providing unique habitat and flood protection, wetlands also hold most of the world’s usable fresh water. Without wetlands, some global species could be pushed to the brink of extinction, and water pollution issues would get worse. A functioning wetland acts as a natural filter for pollutants such as metals, sediment runoff and nitrogen.
