River Restoration on The River Gade
The BBC recently covered the brilliant river restoration work we have been delivering with BAM UK & Ireland and The Environment Agency, and other project partners, Dacorum Borough Council and Affinity Water at Gadebridge Park on the River Gade.
Our works involved the realignment of the River Gade to reduce flood risk, whilst boosting and creating habitat for wildlife. The Gade, one of the UK’s rare chalk streams, was artificially straight and clogged with vegetation and silt – now it winds its way along its natural route through the centre of the park.
The new channel had 14 riffles and pools installed, under the approval of a suitably qualified geomorphologist to ensure flow diversity.
The site allowed for the site won material to be utilised – the gravel used to create the riffles was from the excavation of the new channel, the existing channel was infilled using the excavated material from the new channel too, the vegetation cleared from the existing channel was translocated to the new channel, as well as marginal planting of plug plants and hydroseeding of the channel banks.
