Erosion Protection

Expert Erosion Protection & Erosion Control Solutions

Erosion is a natural process, and critical for healthy functioning of rivers. Erosion protection, also referred to as erosion control or erosion restoration, relates to the practice of preventing the gradual destruction of agriculture, coast, land or rivers. FiveRivers are industry leaders in erosion protection works, including scour protection and asset protection working with nature to design suitable solutions. With more than 25 years of experience delivering environmental and ecological projects, our team combines practical construction expertise with a detailed understanding of rivers, wetlands and natural habitats. We can take your project from the issue to deliver, designing a solution and obtaining all necessary consents through liaison with the Environment Agency and/or local authorities, meaning all works can be delivered as smoothly as possible.

Human activity has accelerated the speed at which erosion takes place, but we at FiveRivers believe that the remedy could be found in how we choose to tackle the issue. As with all of our works, we prioritise nature based solutions, using natural materials (such as sustainably-sourced oak, native plants and naturally occurring aggregates/soils) in the creation of our revetments. By working with natural processes rather than against them, our erosion control solutions can provide long-term bank stability while supporting habitat creation and biodiversity. We’re proud to say that this is something we’ve done since our inception in 1997s, and will continue to do in all of our erosion protection and scour projects.

Whether you require riverbank erosion protection, scour protection, asset protection or bank stabilisation, FiveRivers can provide support from initial assessment and design through to consenting, construction and delivery. No matter where you’re based in the UK, or whatever your project entails, we’re here to work with you! FiveRivers can help maintain assets and infrastructure by preventing and minimising erosion. The Problems

Erosion is Natural

Erosion is a natural process, caused by factors such as water movement, wind and temperature changes, and is a natural function of healthy rivers. In rivers and watercourses, increased flow velocities, flooding, changes to channel form and historic river management can all contribute to accelerated erosion. While it can be a scary word, erosion isn’t always bad. However, we understand why the very idea of erosion may put panic into the heart of any land owner, and it’s for this reason that we take a sympathetic angle to erosion protection.

In the wrong place, however, erosion can be a problem – and an expensive one. Much of the UK is exposed to erosion damage, with lakes, rivers and estuaries at risk of being seriously impacted, ultimately leading to a loss of valuable habitat, disruption to utilities and threats to infrastructure and housing.

Consideration must be given to how erosion is dealt with and where it is to be left as a natural process. Identifying the underlying cause of erosion is an important first step in determining the most appropriate erosion control solution. At FiveRivers, we consider the wider river or landscape system rather than treating erosion as an isolated problem. There are also restrictions set out by the Environment Agency which stipulate which erosion protection works can and cannot go ahead.

The Solutions

Nature-based Erosion Control Solutions

Traditional hard engineering can have an important role in protecting vulnerable infrastructure, but it is not always the most appropriate approach for the wider environment.

At FiveRivers, we specialise in nature-based erosion control solutions that use natural processes and materials to improve stability and resilience. Depending on site conditions, this can involve combining structural and ecological techniques to create a more sustainable form of erosion protection. Native vegetation can help reinforce riverbanks through root structures, while natural materials can provide initial protection as vegetation becomes established. This approach forms part of FiveRivers’ wider commitment to delivering nature-based solutions that protect and enhance natural capital.

Erosion protection can be a challenging process – often involving careful navigation to access sites (for example, to get an excavator into a river channel) – and requires effective solutions from an experienced team.

FiveRivers are specialists when it comes to erosion protection services and we understand that the very idea of erosion cause concerns but we approach erosion with skill and careful consideration taking a nature based solutions approach, using site-won materials and vegetation to make our erosion protection work possible. Our erosion control services are highly bespoke and designed to provide comprehensive solutions that address erosion challenges in a proactive and sustainable manner. With our expertise, you can confidently navigate erosion challenges while ensuring the long-term sustainability of your projects.

Our experience includes projects for organisations such as the Environment Agency, water companies, local authorities, infrastructure organisations and private landowners. Our work includes river restoration, erosion protection, asset protection and other environmental construction services.
