Erosion Protection

Erosion Protection

Erosion protection/erosion control or restoration, relates to the practice of preventing the gradual destruction of agriculture, coast, land or rivers.

Erosion is a natural process, and critical for healthy functioning of rivers. Also referred to as erosion control or erosion restoration, this service relates to the practice of preventing the gradual destruction of agriculture, coast, land or rivers. FiveRivers are industry leaders in erosion protection works, including scour protection and asset protection working with nature to design suitable solutions. We can take your project from the issue to deliver, designing a solution and obtaining all necessary consents through liaison with the Environment Agency and/or local authorities, meaning all works can be delivered as smoothly as possible.

Human activity has accelerated the speed at which erosion takes place, but we at FiveRivers believe that the remedy could be found in how we choose to tackle the issue. As with all of our works, we prioritise nature based solutions, using natural materials (such as sustainably-sourced oak, native plants and naturally occurring aggregates/soils) in the creation of our revetments. We’re proud to say that this is something we’ve done since our inception in 1997s, and will continue to do in all of our erosion protection and scour projects.

Our team is able to carry out all erosion protection works. No matter where you’re based in the UK, or whatever your erosion protection project entails, we’re here to work with you!

The Problems

Erosion is Natural

Erosion is a natural process, caused by factors such as water movement, wind and temperature changes, and is a natural function of a healthy rivers. While it can be a scary word, erosion isn’t always bad. However, we understand why the very idea of erosion may put panic into the heart of any land owner, and it’s for this reason that we take a sympathetic angle to erosion protection.

In the wrong place, however, erosion can be a problem – and an expensive one. Much of the UK is exposed to erosion damage, with lakes, rivers and estuaries at risk of being seriously impacted, ultimately leading to a loss of valuable habitat, disruption to utilities and threats to infrastructure and housing.

Consideration must be given to how erosion is dealt with and where it is to be left as a natural process. For example, there are restrictions set out by the Environment Agency which stipulate which erosion protection works can and cannot go ahead.

The Solutions

Nature-based Solutions

Erosion protection can be a challenging process – often involving careful navigation to access sites (for example, to get an excavator into a river channel) – and requires effective solutions from an experienced team.

FiveRivers are specialists when it comes to erosion protection services and we understand that the very idea of erosion cause concerns but we approach erosion with skill and careful consideration taking a nature based solutions approach, using site-won materials and vegetation to make our erosion protection work possible.
