FiveRivers have been commissioned by idverde UK to undertake fish surveys on two lakes within Kelsey Park in the London borough of Bromley. The project focussed on identifying fish species and carrying out health checks in advance of a fish rescue due to proposed desilting work on the lakes.

The area has received a huge investment from Bromley Council to develop the local park, including a full desilt of the lake to improve the overall condition of the lake enhancing the environment for all aquatic life.

FiveRivers surveyed the site with a variety of methods to maximise catch output, tailoring the methods to each lake. The larger lake was surveyed with a 100m seine net twice, 5 fyke nets left on the lake overnight, and then the margins were electric fished on the second day after removal of the fyke nets. The smaller lake was thoroughly electric fished as this was decided to be the best method by the survey lead due to access logistics.

The survey yielded a sufficient sample of caught fish eligible for health checks. The fish examined were confirmed to be healthy, indicating that the remaining fish of the same species can be relocated.

Once the methodology for the desilting works has been finalised, the option for fish removal and translocation will be reviewed in detail in order to prepare for the desilting works.
