Wetland Creation at Chamber Mead.

FiveRivers are currently on site delivering a wetland scheme in partnership with the South East Rivers Trust. The scheme will see the construction of two wetlands and a sediment trap to help conserve and improve the water quality of the Hogsmill River, one the UK’s precious chalk streams.

The scheme has received funding from The Coca-Cola Foundation, the Environment Agency, Surrey County Council, the Rivers Trust, Thames Water, the Garfield Weston Foundation, Natural England and the Zoological Society of London, as well as support from Epsom and Ewell Borough Council.

Over the years, the Hogsmill River has been polluted from road runoff and foul sewage discharge, adversely affecting the water quality. These wetlands will provide multiple benefits; the treatment of water to improve its quality, complex biodiversity and habitat types, educational opportunities for local schools, and enhanced amenity value, providing access to nature for local communities.

FiveRivers works include the complete diversion of the main river (Green Lanes Stream) through a newly constructed channel, passing through a sediment trap and two wetlands before connecting back into the main river Hogsmill downstream. The installation of a pedestrian foot bridge over the new channel, excavations with removal offsite and the diversion of a section of footpath. We are currently six weeks into our 10-week programme, and we can’t wait to see the results.

South East Rivers Trust Senior Project Manager, Ed Byers, said this about the project: “We are excited to be bringing the Chamber Mead wetlands to the Hogsmill Local Nature Reserve and to work with Five Rivers. The wetlands are much needed to improve the water quality of a precious chalk stream for wildlife and for the enjoyment of the public, who have shown great support for this project.”
