Case Study
Erosion protection on the River Nadder
Location

Date
May 2017
Client
Private
Stakeholders
Private land owner

Tasks
- 80m of bank re-graded to create a soft marginal toe
- Installation of green oak revetment
- A low level marginal berm of coir roll was planted with native aquatic plant species in front of the oak revetment
- Two sets of access steps were installed to the river
Key remarks
- Ecological surveys were carried out to assess the presence of water vole, a protected species
- Ecological mitigation measures adopted to prevent harm to the established water vole population
- Bespoke step designed and build in-house
- Bio-engineering used to create a natural solution to bank erosion
Effects
- The client had been losing inches of their garden to the river every year due to flooding and erosion; the marginal toe increases flood capacity, and provides a natural buffer protecting the bank from future erosion and loss of lawn
- The oak revetment provides a formal edge to the lawn and protection against further erosion
- Foraging habitat established for water vole
- Fish habitat created for juvenile fish
